Printing out Flip-Mats on the cheap

Post by mikem91 » Tue Jul 18, 2017 1:13 pm

I'm going to go over what I've done, what tools I used and what vendors.

Software tool used -> GIMP
This is open-source.
https://www.gimp.org/downloads/

Open your PDF in GIMP. You'll be asked to select which page you'll want. You need to do each page at a time.
Compare your flip-mat size (usually 24x30) to the available sizes of prints. I selected 24x36 as being the closest.
In GIMP, under Image select Canvas Size. Use the drop down to select your unit in inches, then change the canvas size to that of the paper.
Export the image and a .png file (or whatever ideally lossless format you like).
Repeat for each page you want printed.

Go to Staple's site and drill down and over to copy and printing > engineering prints.
https://www.staples.com/sbd/content/cop ... rints.html
Upload the images.
Select portrait and the correct paper size.
Add to cart and check out.

Once you figure out how to get the images you want from the pdf to the printer, it's not so bad.

There's probably some fudge you'll loose because of margins, but maybe not enough to worry about. I'll be getting my prints Wednesday.
